MenAble Man Walk collaboration with Fire It Up for Men's Health Launch

Sunday 16th April 2023 saw MenAble collaborate with The Man Walk and a number of supporting partners to present a community walk and fundraiser for the Fire it up for Men’s Health launch.

The launch announced the arrival of a new research foundation in WA focussed on Men’s health. The MHT or Men Healthier Together Foundation is affiliated with the well established Spinnaker Research Foundation based out of Fiona Stanley Hospital in Perth.

At the core of the MHT Foundation is the West Australian Men’s Health Initiative (WAMHI). WAMHI will pioneer approaches to improve mental and physical health and alleviate the burden of diseases and injuries over-represented in West Australian men.

By better understanding the complex relationships between mental and physical health and lifestyle factors, this initiative will examine the causes of men’s predominant health conditions, the behaviours that exacerbate them and explore how we can work across all of our communities to ensure every West Australian male has the best opportunity for a healthy life.

Central to this initiative is an examination of behaviours, attitudes and responses West Australian men have toward their health as well as ways to improve health literacy and proactivity for our fathers and grandfathers to have a meaningful impact on their sons and grandsons.

A multi-generational approach to mental and physical health will be vital to improving health and mitigating the increasing burden of mental and physical health issues that impact too many of our men, young and old, too soon.

MenAble are proud supporters of the MHT foundation and look forward to collaborating in the pursuit of improved health outcomes for WA men. Particularly those from regional, rural and remote areas where the challenges are usually the greatest.

The Fire up for Men’s Health event in Busselton was part of a statewide launch. More than 100 people joined the community walk then enjoyed conversation over coffees and breakfast on the Busselton foreshore.

Dr Michael Hunter, lead physician with the longstanding Busselton Population Health Study, spoke with the group about the importance of research to informing optimal clinical care as well as healthcare policy.
